Xolo Maridueña Photo: Warner Bros. PicturesBug-people are a hot item at the movies these days, so after watching men swing like spiders or scurry like ants, is the audience ready to cheer a beetle? Never mind that “Blue Beetle” sounds like one of the also-rans mentioned in the superhero-dense universe of “The Incredibles”; the character has a long pedigree, with comic-book storylines launched in 2006, 1966 and even 1939. That makes him a kind of old-money member of the genre.

Summer movie preview 2023

CNN —Most moviegoers can pinpoint one summer movie – or perhaps, a summer of movies – in their formative years that really and truly cemented their love for going to the cinema, whether it be 1975’s “Jaws,” “E.T. And while streaming has clearly siphoned off part of the audience, particularly for more serious films, what we think of as “summer movies” still have the potential to rake in cash just like the old days. (CNN and DC are both part of the same parent company, Warner Bros. Courtesy Warner Bros. PicturesInitially meant for streaming platforms, this vehicle will herald the cinematic arrival of DC Studios’ first Latino superhero, played by Xolo Maridueña of “Cobra Kai” and “Parenthood” fame. If the fast-paced trailer is any indication, the movie looks sure to whisk those dog days of summer doldrums away quite nicely.
(CNN) Crossing the streams with its sequels, the fifth season of "Cobra Kai" features heavy dollops of the second and third "The Karate Kid" movies while continue to carve out its own next-generation melodrama, all in extraordinarily nimble fashion. While it's not the best series on TV (OK, Netflix), there should be some kind of prize for the best revival culled from limited source material. Still, in order to battle the bad guy from "Karate Kid III," Daniel (Ralph Macchio) has enlisted the heavy from "II," Chozen (Yuji Okumoto), in an unlikely but utterly hysterical alliance. (A little fuzzy on his English, when Daniel suggests they need to cut off the head of the snake, the literal-minded Chozen pulls out a knife and is ready to go.) The kids, in fact, have as many shifting allegiances as the elder generation, whose AARP-eligible karate masters continue to prove remarkably spry.
The series continues the story that originated in 1986's "The Karate Kid," offering an entertaining blend of action, drama, comedy, and '80s nostalgia.
